Elon Musk is returning to a Pentagon-linked assignment under the Trump administration, but this time his brief is looking decades into the future of warfare rather than cutting federal spending.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has named Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as co-directors of Project Meridian, a 120-day Pentagon study examining the technologies and capabilities that could shape future battlefields.
The announcement marks Musk's first formal return to a government-linked assignment since he left the administration in May 2025, after his work leading the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
The new assignment is also notable because Musk and Luckey are business leaders whose companies already work with the US government on defence-related technology. The Pentagon says Meridian will focus on future battlefields and capabilities rather than developing immediate military strategies or policies.
Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey Join Pentagon Future Warfare Study
Hegseth announced Project Meridian during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico on 30 September. The Pentagon says the project will be commissioned through its chief technology officer, Emil Michael, with Musk, Luckey and Gingrich working alongside experts from academia, policy and industry.
The study is intended to identify capabilities the US military may need to maintain technological superiority on future battlefields. Hegseth said the project is deliberately focused on long-term possibilities rather than immediate military strategy or policy.
Its remit is unusually wide. Pentagon material says the team will examine future warfighting domains ranging from subterranean environments to the cislunar frontier, the area of space extending from Earth towards the Moon.
Emerging fields including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, directed energy, robotics and biotechnology are also part of the assessment.
The project has a fixed 120-day timetable. Its work is expected to result in an unclassified report that will be made public, alongside a classified annex containing material that will not be released publicly.
That distinction matters because Meridian is not itself being described as a new military command.
Hegseth separately announced an Autonomous Warfare Command, a planned four-star combatant command intended to expand the military's use of autonomous and robotic systems. Musk's assignment is with Meridian, the forward-looking study, rather than that command.
Musk's Pentagon Return Raises Questions Over Defence Industry Links
According to the US Government Accountability Office, Musk held a White House position as a senior adviser before separating from the administration in May 2025. The GAO also recorded that Trump had described Musk as the leader of the wider DOGE effort.
Musk's tenure drew political criticism before he left government. Reuters reported at the time that the administration's cost-cutting campaign had fallen short of the much larger savings target Musk had publicly discussed. Musk later described DOGE as somewhat successful but said he would not take the role again.
Project Meridian places him in a very different setting. The areas examined by Meridian overlap with technologies associated with Musk's companies, including space systems and autonomous technologies, while SpaceX has an established relationship with the US government.
Luckey brings a similarly direct connection to defence technology. Anduril develops autonomous systems and other military technology, and the Pentagon has awarded the company contracts covering areas including counter-drone systems and other defence capabilities.
One 2025 Marine Corps contract awarded to Anduril Federal had a maximum value of $642.2 million and covered installation, delivery and support for counter-small-unmanned-aircraft systems.
Those existing business relationships do not establish that Project Meridian will favour either company, and the Pentagon has not said that the study will award contracts to Musk's or Luckey's businesses.
Gingrich adds a different background to the group. The former Republican House speaker has long written and spoken about national security, technology and future threats, and previously served on the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board during Trump's first administration.
For now, Project Meridian's concrete output is expected to be its report rather than an immediate new weapons system. The next stage will be whether the Pentagon acts on the recommendations and turns them into funded programmes, testing efforts or military capabilities.
