After receiving a confirmation message from Taco Bell's automated recruitment bot, job seeker Abby (@yappyabbyy) visited the branch expecting answers about her first shift. However, she was met with instant confusion when the store's human management appeared completely unaware of her hiring.
In a video shared on 2 July 2026 that has already pulled in over 2.1 million views, she detailed a baffling post-interview experience at a Taco Bell location that left her entirely empty-handed.
AI Confirmation Set Up a First Day Nobody Expected
Abby walked out of her Taco Bell interview feeling genuinely optimistic about her chances. That confidence skyrocketed moments later when a call from 'Bella', Taco Bell's AI recruitment bot, confirmed she had gotten the job. The bot confirmed a 1 July start date and told her to log her personal details online to complete onboarding.

Assuming the setup was complete, Abby expected her first day to go smoothly. Little did she know, a frustrating surprise was waiting for her when the start date passed without any contact from the restaurant.
The AI Start Date Passed Without Any Contact
After submitting the online forms requested by the automated assistant, Abby figured the store would reach out shortly to sort out her hours. Instead, days passed with absolute silence.
When 1 July came and went without any communication from the restaurant, her excitement gave way to sheer confusion. 'It's July 1st, and you hear nothing,' she recalled. Driven to get answers, she walked straight into the store the following day to figure out what was really happening behind the scenes.
Stepping into the restaurant to clear up her schedule, Abby encountered an awkward situation when she tried to clarify her hiring. Rather than facing her directly, the store manager reportedly stayed in the back office and sent the assistant manager out to speak with her. The assistant manager did not sugarcoat the situation, telling Abby flatly, 'So, you're not hired.'
Human Managers Blamed a Software Error
Abby was told that the confirmation from the AI bot had been a glitch in the automated system. Her high hopes were quickly dashed in the lobby, leaving Abby to manage a brief 'Okay' before walking out. The unexpected turn of events prompted her to ask, 'Taco Bell, what the hell?'
She even backed up her account by sharing a screenshot of the message she received confirming her appointment.
Abby is far from the only applicant to encounter problems with automated recruitment. A survey of 1,066 US job seekers by Enhancv found that 50.5% had received at least one rejection in the previous year without any human feedback.
Among those respondents, 63.8% believed AI had made the decision, while just 9.7% of the full sample said they had been clearly told that AI was being used to evaluate their applications.
Abby's Experience Highlights AI Hiring Risks
Outraged by the story, viewers flooded the comment section to air their frustration. TikTok user @potatonapper42069 claimed that being given an official start date along with a hiring confirmation created a legally binding agreement and argued that Abby had essentially been terminated without cause.
'You can sue them for wrongful termination. At the very least, you can now file for unemployment,' @potatonapper42069 added.
Echoing that sentiment, @wolfshepherd6199 advised, 'You go file for unemployment. That was an offer. If your state turns you down for unemployment, you call an appointment at an attorney's office.'
