Rich Logis's departure from MAGA was reportedly a gradual process rather than a single moment of political conversion.
The former Trump campaign volunteer spent years deeply involved in the movement, writing for conservative outlets, hosting a podcast, and building a public identity around his support for Donald Trump.
His eventual break began with doubts about the information he was consuming. In 2021, Logis said he became unsettled after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave a platform at press conferences to people making claims he regarded as anti-vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Logis said the episode prompted him to deliberately expand the range of news and information sources he followed. As he compared different accounts of major events, including the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol, he said he began reassessing beliefs he had previously accepted.
Logis eventually left MAGA in 2022 and later made his departure public.
How Rich Logis Became a MAGA Insider
Logis had reportedly entered politics as an independent who was frustrated with the established political system. When Trump launched his first presidential campaign in 2015, the candidate's outsider image appealed to him.
Logis saw Trump as someone willing to challenge the existing political order, and that perception drew him further into the movement.
His involvement went well beyond voting. Logis worked on Trump's 2016 campaign, helped with voter outreach and later became a MAGA commentator. He wrote for outlets including Fox News and The Federalist, produced his own podcast and became increasingly embedded in the movement's media ecosystem.
By his own account, MAGA had also become a community where he found friendship, belonging and a shared political purpose.
That sense of belonging became important to understanding why leaving was difficult. Logis has described becoming heavily invested in a worldview shaped by fear and anger, and he has said the media he consumed reinforced those emotions. He has also described being deeply enmeshed in what he called the MAGA media echo chamber.
The first serious doubts emerged in 2021. During the Delta wave of COVID-19, Logis was troubled by DeSantis allowing people he considered anti-vaccine figures to speak at a press conference.
He said the episode left him confused because DeSantis had previously promoted COVID-19 vaccination. After that experience, Logis said he began diversifying his news and information sources.
He began reading publications, including The New York Times, NPR and The Washington Post, alongside the sources he had already followed. Logis has said that widening his information sources forced him to revisit assumptions he had previously regarded as established.
He has described spending roughly a year wrestling with the possibility that some of his strongly held beliefs were wrong.
Why Diversifying News Sources Changed His Thinking
One of the events Logis reconsidered was the 6 January attack on the US Capitol. He has said that, before broadening his sources, he believed the event had been exaggerated.
He later said that expanding his information sources changed his understanding of 6 January and led him to conclude that the event involved an attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
The process eventually brought Logis to the Uvalde school shooting on 24 May 2022. In a recent interview, he identified that day as the point when he quietly left MAGA, saying the political response he anticipated and subsequently saw, including calls for more guns and greater access to guns, became unacceptable to him.
Logis has also described Uvalde as a crucial turning point in his ebook, although that account dates his quiet departure to around Independence Day 2022.
Leaving privately was not enough for Logis. Because his previous support for Trump and MAGA had been public, he decided that his withdrawal should also be public. On 30 August 2022, he published a mea culpa apologising for his support and for words and rhetoric that may have hurt others.
He has since described making amends as an important part of moving forward.
That public apology eventually helped lead to Leaving MAGA, the organisation Logis founded to provide a community for people questioning or leaving the movement. The organisation describes its work as helping people transition away from MAGA while rebuilding relationships and community.
