A 15-year-old Florida girl has been charged after investigators said she used an AI-altered image to falsely link her ex-boyfriend to a school shooting threat at Riverview High School in Hillsborough County.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the teenager admitted sending school administrators an email containing the image after detectives determined that the male student apparently depicted in the threatening post had not created it.
The incident came to light on 14 October, when deputies responded to the school after administrators received an email containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening a shooting on campus.
How the AI-Altered Image Led Investigators to the Florida Teen
According to the sheriff's office, the Instagram post initially appeared to have been published by a male student at Riverview High School. The screenshot was sent to school administrators by email, prompting the response from deputies.
Investigators interviewed the student whose identity appeared to be associated with the post. They determined that he had not created it, challenging the initial impression left by the screenshot and redirecting the investigation towards the person who had sent the email.
Detectives subsequently linked the email to the boy's former girlfriend, a 15-year-old who had previously attended the school. Authorities said she admitted sending the message containing an image that had been altered using artificial intelligence.

The sheriff's office has not, in the account reported by NBC 6, identified the AI tool allegedly used or provided technical details explaining how the image was manipulated.
The available information also does not establish how widely the original Instagram post was circulated or whether other students saw it before administrators alerted authorities.
Florida Teen Faces Three Charges Over School Shooting Threat
The teenager was charged with written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting, unlawful use of a two-way communications device and disrupting a school campus, according to NBC 6's report of the sheriff's office investigation.
The charges relate to the alleged threat and the communications involved in bringing it to the school's attention. They are allegations, not convictions, and the teenager's reported admission to sending the email should not be treated as a judicial finding of guilt.
Authorities have publicly described the investigative findings, but sources did not include an arrest affidavit, a court docket or a full charging document that would independently establish the details of the case.
The sheriff's office account also does not establish a motive for the alleged conduct. Although the email was linked to the teenager's former boyfriend, the information reported so far does not explain why the image was allegedly sent or whether investigators identified any further communications between the pair.
The male student, meanwhile, was interviewed as part of the investigation and was not identified by authorities as the person who created the threatening post. Detectives' reported finding that he had not made it was central to the inquiry that followed the school's initial alert.
NBC 6 reported the charges on 16 October, two days after deputies responded to the school. The available account does not detail any subsequent court proceedings or indicate whether the teenager has entered a plea.
