A man says his Telegram account was hacked through voicemail after an attacker repeatedly called his phone, kept the line busy, and redirected a Telegram login code to his voicemail.

The incident happened at about 3:59am, according to his account, after roughly 10 calls from a No Caller ID number arrived within minutes.

The account describes an attack that required no suspicious link, malicious download or obvious interaction from the victim.

Instead, the attacker allegedly exploited the way Telegram can deliver login codes by automated phone call, combined with remote access to voicemail.

How the Voicemail Attack Allegedly Worked

The man said the first sign came at 3:54am, when his phone began ringing repeatedly from a blocked number. He initially interpreted the calls as harassment. According to his account, however, the calls were being used to keep his phone line occupied.

At the same time, the attacker was allegedly attempting to sign into Telegram using the man's telephone number. The attacker selected the option to receive the login code by phone call.

With the victim's line already busy, the automated Telegram call could not reach him directly. Instead, according to the account, the call went to his voicemail, where the automated system read out the login code.

The attacker then allegedly accessed the voicemail remotely and listened to the message. The man says the attacker was inside his Telegram account by 3:59am.

However, his account does not independently confirm the precise technical details of the incident.

What made the incident particularly concerning was that the victim did not have to click anything. The attack relied on manipulating the telephone connection around the login process rather than persuading him to hand over a code himself.

The calls eventually woke him. Rather than ignoring the disturbance, he checked his notifications and found that Telegram was showing a login from a device he did not recognise.

That alert proved crucial. He says he terminated the unfamiliar session within minutes. By then, however, the intruder had already begun looking through his Telegram conversations.

The Voicemail Warning Hidden Inside a Telegram Hack

According to the man's account, the attacker entered /balance and then /start in old wallet bots found in his chats. The apparent aim was to find funds associated with his Telegram account.

Nothing was ultimately taken, he said, because the wallet bots were no longer active. The attacker did, however, allegedly have enough access to set a new two-step verification password on the account.

The incident also exposed a weakness that the victim says he had not previously considered. He had spent more than 10 years building in crypto, yet had never regarded his voicemail as a meaningful part of his account security.

His advice, however, is straightforward. Telegram's two-step verification should be enabled, with a recovery email attached. Under that setup, a login code alone would not be enough to gain access to the account.

Voicemail itself should also be secured. The account recommends changing the voicemail PIN, disabling remote voicemail access where possible, or turning the service off altogether. It also points to ##002# as a code that cancels call forwarding on most carriers, although the supplied account does not independently verify how that code applies across different networks.

The same concern could extend beyond Telegram, according to the account, to other services that offer authentication codes through automated voice calls.

There is another warning buried in the incident. The victim advises against storing seed phrases, private keys, or passwords in Telegram's Saved Messages, where someone who gains access to the account could potentially find them.

Nothing in his post confirms who carried out the attack, how the voicemail was accessed or whether the same method was used against other accounts.
