Call of Duty caster Maven has stepped away from the Call of Duty League after revealing he is dating the ex-wife of his longtime casting partner Merk — bringing one of competitive gaming's most recognisable commentary partnerships to sudden end.
Maven, whose real name is Clint Evans, announced on 7 October that he would be leaving the CDL for the 'foreseeable future', revealing that his relationship with Maurisa, the former wife of Joe 'Merk' DeLuca, had developed from a long-standing friendship into a romance.
The revelation immediately sent Call of Duty fans into a frenzy, with many turning the awkward fallout between the longtime casting partners into memes and jokes online.
I’ll be stepping away from the CDL for the foreseeable future.

As some of you know, I was very close to my casting partner Joe and his family. Maurisa was one of my best friends. We remained friends, after they divorced, and along the way it became more than that and we started…
'Dude Broke All Sorts of Bro Code': Fans React to Maven's Shock Revelation
The online reaction quickly focused on the unusual circumstances behind Maven's departure, with fans joking about the years of professional chemistry between the two commentators.
One commenter suggested Maven could have kept his announcement much simpler, writing: 'I think a "due to unfortunate circumstances I'll be stepping away from the CDL for a while" probably would've sufficed bro.'
Another was even more blunt, joking: 'Can't cast with my boy no more, I'm fu*kin his ex wife sorry guys. Unreal.'
Others focused on the apparent friendship fallout.
'Dude broke all sorts of bro code,' one commenter wrote.
Another joked: 'Years of building chemistry with your broadcast partner just to eventually discover you had chemistry with his wife too.'
The story even prompted one fan to declare: 'first time in years cod has had a storyline anyone cares about', while another teased: 'talk about a last second ninja plant.'
The comments highlight why the story has quickly travelled beyond the normal Call of Duty esports audience. What might ordinarily have been a straightforward caster departure has become a highly personal story involving friendship, romance and one of the scene's most recognisable professional partnerships.
Maven Reveals Relationship With Merk's Ex-Wife
Maven addressed the situation in a statement posted on X, explaining that he had remained close to Maurisa after she and Merk divorced.
He said their friendship eventually developed into something more.
'I'll be stepping away from the CDL for the foreseeable future,' Maven wrote.
'As some of you know, I was very close to my casting partner Joe and his family. Maurisa was one of my best friends. We remained friends, after they divorced, and along the way it became more than that and we started dating.
'I understand how unconventional/taboo it is. It's truly not something I ever foresaw happening.'
Maven did not say whether the CDL had asked him to step away or whether the decision was entirely his own.
He also did not publicly detail Merk's response.
For now, however, the professional consequence is clear: Maven and Merk will no longer appear together as the familiar casting team that Call of Duty fans have watched for years.
Years of Casting Chemistry Are Now Overshadowed
Maven and Merk were not simply two commentators who happened to share a desk.
Their voices became closely associated with competitive Call of Duty, with the pair working together across different eras of the esport and developing the kind of on-air chemistry that takes years to build.
That makes Maven's departure particularly significant.
Modern esports broadcasts are global productions, with commentators becoming personalities through livestreams, social media and years of appearances in front of fans. But behind the technology, cameras and microphones are personal relationships that can become complicated when professional and private lives overlap.
In Maven's case, his relationship with Maurisa has changed the circumstances surrounding his professional relationship with Merk.
It is unclear whether the two will ever return to the commentary booth together.
Maven Leaves the Door Open for a Return
Despite stepping away, Maven has not completely closed the door on his Call of Duty career.
He said he hoped to eventually return to working on the CDL and thanked fans for their support over the years.
'I hope that one day I'll be back working on the CDL. If not, it was a hell of a ride, and I appreciate the love over the years,' he said.
'Please continue to show support to Joe, the CDL, and its talent!'
For now, one of Call of Duty esports' most recognisable casting duos has been split.
