Apple's first-ever foldable, the iPhone Duo, may have stolen the spotlight at the 2026 Apple Event, but the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max cannot be ignored completely. Of all the upgrades in the new flagships, the cameras in the new iPhones are worthy of a notable mention. And we are going to tell you why.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have a 48MP Fusion Main camera, which is the first iPhone camera to get a variable aperture. Apple calls it the most advanced camera it has ever built. But is it really?
The iPhone 18 Pro camera is paired with a new sensor and computational imaging pipeline. According to Apple, this system delivers better low-light photography, crisper detail in group shots, and sharper images overall. Don't just take Apple's word for it.
Apple released a set of seven sample images shot on the iPhone 18 Pro, which offer the clearest look yet at what the phone's biggest camera overhaul in years can actually do. And no, we haven't got our hands on the new iPhones to test out the cameras ourselves, but in due time.
Decoding iPhone 18 Pro Camera Samples
Two of the first sample shots as seen above show the camera intelligently widening to ƒ/1.48, Apple's widest aperture yet on iPhone, to pull in more light for low-light scenes. The third image below shows the same principle applied to Night mode, with the aperture adjusting automatically in darker environments.
If you look at the fourth image below, it demonstrates the opposite end of the range: narrowing the aperture to ƒ/4 to keep more of a group in focus, where background subjects can blur out. Pro users can manually select any of the four aperture settings themselves in the Camera app, rather than relying on the automatic adjustment.
Moving on to the fifth image, it highlights new texture and grain controls added to Photographic Styles, letting users adjust colour and skin tones together. And then there's the sixth camera sample, which shows off the new Pro controls interface. It brings manual adjustment of shutter speed, aperture and white balance directly into the Camera app, which can be used to create a deliberate motion blur.
Finally, the last image, as seen below, showcases the new computational imaging pipeline, which Apple says produces more detailed shots straight out of the Main camera regardless of shooting mode.
Together, the seven images position the iPhone 18 Pro's camera as a system built around user control as much as raw specs, giving both casual users and professional photographers more say over how a shot looks, rather than leaving it entirely to computational processing.
