Elon Musk Deletes Election Posts After Republican Losses: His Own AI Helps Expose It

The AI chatbot identified missing messages from Musk’s X account, but neither Musk nor the platform has explained why they disappeared

Elon Musk has removed multiple election-related posts from his X account following a series of Republican defeats in the 2026 US midterm elections. The deletions came to light after users turned to Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Musk's xAI, to check whether the billionaire had been removing messages urging Americans to vote Republican.

In response to one such question, Grok said Musk had deleted his Election Day message, which read 'Vote red today!', along with at least one earlier pinned post encouraging support for Republican candidates.

The chatbot's response has since drawn attention because it identified missing election messages from the account belonging to its own owner. The episode also comes after Musk spent more than $445 million (£334 million) backing Republican candidates and political groups, several of whom lost their races despite his financial support.

Grok Says Elon Musk Deleted Election Day Posts From X

The exchange that brought the deletions into focus was reported on Wednesday, November 4.

When an X user asked whether Musk had been removing his election-related messages, Grok reportedly replied: 'Yes, he deleted the Election Day post "Vote red today!" (and at least one earlier pinned call to vote Republican) after the midterm results showed major Democratic gains.'

This practice was replicated by other users too with Grok confirming it again as well.

Grok added that other recent posts from Musk remained visible on his account. This distinction matters because the chatbot was not claiming that Musk had removed all his political content. Instead, it identified specific election appeals that were no longer available.

The missing Election Day message was particularly direct. Musk had posted 'Vote red today!' on Tuesday, November 3, shortly before Americans went to the polls. By Wednesday, November 4, the message was no longer visible on his timeline. Musk had not immediately provided an explanation for its disappearance.

The earlier pinned message is another part of the story. According to Grok's response, Musk had also taken down a post urging voters to support Republican senators. The message was reportedly published on October 29 and had been pinned to his profile before its removal. However, the original post could not be independently verified.

The original X post supplied for this story also drew attention to the apparent deletions. However, the post itself was not accessible for independent inspection during research, so the claims about the removed messages are based on the reported Grok exchange and supporting coverage rather than an independent archive of every deleted post.

Musk's Political Spending Faces Questions After Republican Defeats

The timing of the deletions has attracted attention because of the amount Musk invested in the election cycle. According to reports based on Federal Election Commission records,

Musk spent more than $445 million (£334 million) supporting Republican candidates and political groups during the campaign period. This made him the largest individual political donor in the 2026 midterm elections.

Texas was a particular focus of his spending. Reports estimated that around $224 million (£168 million) went towards political efforts in the state, including attempts to defeat Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.

Talarico ultimately defeated Republican Ken Paxton, becoming the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate election since Lloyd Bentsen's re-election in 1988. His victory was among the results that drew attention to the limits of Musk's financial backing.

Musk also responded to the election results with a series of sarcastic posts. In one post, he wrote: 'Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time'. He followed it with another remark: 'Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now.'

The comments came after the Republican defeats, although Musk did not explicitly connect either post to his decision to remove the election appeals.

There are also questions about what the results could mean for his businesses. According to reports, Democrats taking control of Congress and winning key state races could bring greater scrutiny of Musk's companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. Texas is particularly important because both businesses have major operations and interests there.

The reported Grok exchange has also circulated widely online, with users sharing details about the missing posts. However, online reactions do not establish why Musk removed them, and neither he nor X has provided a confirmed explanation.

For now, the episode offers an unusual example of an AI chatbot being used to examine the online activity of the person who owns the platform on which it operates. Grok's response identified the missing election messages, while Musk's remaining posts showed that his wider commentary about the results had not disappeared.
