Anthropic’s Claude Now Reads Bank Transactions, but Disconnecting Your Account Won’t Erase Old Chats

Anthropic's Claude can now analyse up to two years of bank transactions, but disconnecting a bank will not erase financial information already recorded in chats.

Announced on 5 November 2026, Personal Finance is gradually rolling out to paying subscribers in the United States. Anthropic's guidance makes clear that stopping bank access and deleting existing conversations are separate actions.

Claude Can Examine 24 Months of Transactions

The Personal Finance beta is available on Claude's Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US. Users select which accounts to connect through Plaid, which handles authentication without revealing banking passwords to Claude.

Claude can read account names, types, balances, credit limits and usually the last four digits of account numbers. It can also examine up to 24 months of transactions, including dates, merchants, amounts and spending categories.

Users can request spending breakdowns, identify possible duplicate charges and create dashboards. Access is read-only. Claude cannot move money, manage investments or execute trades. Anthropic says the feature is not designed to provide investment advice.

Disconnecting a Bank Does Not Delete Chats

Unlinking a bank stops Claude reading its data. However, financial information already included in conversations, shared links or published artefacts remains until users remove it, according to Anthropic's Help Centre.

Shared conversations can reveal account figures to anyone who opens the link. Published artefacts may also display financial information and remain accessible even after the original chat is deleted.

Anthropic says Claude requests confirmation before publishing an artefact from a chat involving linked accounts. Such chats are also designed to be excluded from Claude's memory and subsequent chat searches. These safeguards do not delete previously shared information.

Deleted Chats May Remain Stored for 30 Days

Deleting a conversation removes it from visible history immediately. However, Anthropic's retention policy states that back-end deletion takes up to 30 days. Exceptions include legal requirements, disputes and policy enforcement.

If users enable model improvement, eligible chats may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years.

Anthropic says conversations in the dedicated Personal Finance hub are excluded from model training. Information shared outside that hub remains subject to users' applicable privacy settings.

Cancelling a Subscription Does Not Unlink Banks

When a paid subscription ends, Personal Finance becomes unavailable and Claude can no longer read linked accounts in chats.

However, bank connections remain linked unless users disconnect them. Resubscribing can restore connections and dashboards, although banks may require authentication again. Deleting a Claude account automatically unlinks banks once deletion is processed.

How to Remove Financial Information

To disconnect accounts, open Personal Finance.

On the web or desktop app, select the three-dot menu, then 'Manage linked accounts'. Mobile users can tap the settings gear. Choose 'Unlink' for a bank or 'Unlink all banks' to disconnect everything.

Users can also disconnect Claude through Plaid. Next, delete sensitive conversations and review shared links and published artefacts separately. Removing the last linked bank permanently resets the Personal Finance dashboard.

Anthropic warns that balances may be outdated and duplicate connections can distort spending figures. Users should check important totals against bank statements.

Revoking bank access prevents further reading, but does not automatically erase financial information already shared with Claude.
